WELCOME TO WAKE FOREST MEMORIAL POST 8466

Wake Forest Memorial VFW Post 8466
As yesterday's defenders of freedom, we want to welcome today's military service members into our ranks to become part of our elite group.  Our common bond is the battlefield, whether it is service in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Kosovo, the Persian Gulf, the war on terrorism or peace-keeping expeditionary campaigns. Your courage and sacrifice have made a difference in preserving and defending world peace.

Reading of the Names of NCs POW/MIAs

3 June 2023

All those who fought and served their country when they received the call, were men and women of courage, judgment, integrity and dedication. Where does dedication end? You can never put an end to dedication. After all, those who remain Prisoners of War or are still Missing in Action are still serving with never ending dedication. For them, it can never be over. For us, we can never let their sacrifices, or they themselves, be forgotten.

To help us remember, the Vietnam Veterans of America hosts a monthly reading of the names of each of North Carolina's remaining POW/MIAs from the Vietnam era. This brief but moving ceremony takes place at Noon on the first Saturday of each month (rain or shine) at the Vietnam Memorial on the grounds of the State Capitol in Raleigh. It will continue to take place as long as there is even one name left on the list. We encourage you to attend to honor those who could not be present because their whereabouts are unknown.

Of note, it is VFW Post 8466's distinct honor and privilege to perform the ceremony in November of each year by having Post members read the names. We would be most gratified if you would join us each month, but particularly on the first Saturday in November.

Memorial Flag Raising

June 5, 2023

The Town of Wake Forest, American Legion Post 187, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 187, American Legion Riders, VFW Post 8466, the Wake Forest Purple Heart Foundation, and Marine Corps League Detachment 1257 honor the sacrifices of deceased Wake Forest veterans and their families. These services are provided at no cost and provided solely to pay tribute to the service and memory of deceased Wake Forest veterans, while also acknowledging the sacrifices of their families.

Each ceremony features patriotic songs, special remarks, a memorial wreath laying and the ceremonial flag-raising by the Wake Forest Fire Department Honor Guard. After raising the American flag, the WFFD Honor Guard raises the service flag representing the military branch in which the honoree served. Both flags fly in Centennial Plaza throughout the remainder of the month.

This month, we honor the memory and service of Joseph DeLois, 1SG, USA, Ret., and long time member of both Wake Forest Memorial VFW Post 8466 and American Legion Post 187. Please arrive at 221 Brooks Street, Wake Forest by 10:30 AM for the ceremony.

Friday Night on White

June 9, 2023

Mother Nature was good to us last month, and the crowd appreciated it and turned out in good numbers. There was music, good food, and some adult beverages under clear skies. Let's hope this month's event, on June 9 will be sunny and dry, too! Of course, the Chuck Wagon will be there serving our regular menu of 100% Sirloin Burgers, Nathan's All-beef Franks and delicious Bratwurst subs. To learn more about Friday Night on White, go to the Town of Wake Forest website at https://www.wakeforestnc.gov, under "Wake Forest Outdoors". To learn more about the Chuck Wagon, or to volunteer to help the Chuck Wagon crew, click the button on this promotion. If you can't work, just come out anyway and enjoy some great live music and perhaps an adult beverage along the way. And, naturally, visit the Chuck Wagon for some great food!
