Past Commander-in-Chief Billy Ray Cameron

Billy Ray Cameron, 76, of Sanford, passed away peacefully Thursday (12/17/20) at his Sanford home with his family by his side. Billy Ray served his country from 1966 to 1969 in the U.S. Marine Corps. During that time, he served in Vietnam, earning two Meritorious Combat Awards and two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained in combat. Billy Ray was a member of Stanley McLeod VFW Post 5631and was elected Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1983. He served as Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief in 1984 and was elected National Commander-in-Chief in 1985. He was the first Vietnam veteran elected to this national leadership position. During his tenure, the VFW grew to over one million members.
 

A private graveside service will be held at Pocket Presbyterian Church in Sanford.
